Love them or hate them, but the Pinoy adaptations of popular K-dramas are here to stay. We have the remakes to thank for bringing the K-craze to our shores, and even going as far as localizing the plot line, scouting K-looking actors, and featuring Filipino versions of the OSTs.
Here are 8 we remember:
My Girl is probably one of the most successful adaptations to date, both for the show and the actors. Kim Chiu definitely played her character so well, with her natural aegyo and kyeopta appeal. We might as well blame this show for our early fondness of the Kimerald love team.
A lot of us probably watched Full House as our introductory K-drama show. So when it was announced that Heart Evangelista and Richard Gutierrez were to be our local Rain and Song Hye Kyo, we were definitely looking forward to it. Watch out for the episode where Heart sings Three Bears!
The series is actually based on the Korean series of a different name, called 49 Days. It is one of the series types that involve fantasy elements such as body-swapping. Featuring an up-and-coming cast, including Alex Gonzaga and Yen Santos, Pure Love is a heavy romantic drama on relationships and life and death.
All About Eve
The Pinoy version of All About Eve features an all-star cast of industry bigwigs, including Sunshine Dizon, Iza Calzado, Jean Garcia, Eula Valdez, and Richard Gomez, joined by Alfred Vargas and Mark Anthony Fernandez. The heavy drama is female rivalry at its finest, coupled with relationship woes and the tug of war for power.
Stairway To Heaven
Stairway To Heaven, no doubt, is one of the most popular and long-running K-dramas in the Philippines. Despite the endless twists and turns in the story, we kept watching to see how the lovers would end up together.
It was because of the drama’s success that a Pinoy adaptation was made, starring one of the network’s biggest stars, Dingdong Dantes and Rhian Ramos.
Kim Sam Soon
Kim Sam Soon is another of the introductory K-dramas we’ve come to love. It was popular in Korea as it is here. The Pinoy version cast Regine Velasquez in the title role, which made fans all the more excited to see her take a break from singing and showcase her acting prowess this time.
Lovers In Paris
Lovers In Paris was also another huge hit in the Philippines, so much that a Pinoy adaptation was in demand. This is also probably the show that sparked the reel-to-real romance of its lead stars Piolo Pascual and KC Concepcion, who both did amazingly well in portraying more relatable, Filipino versions of their character.
My Love From The Star
One of the most recent Pinoy remakes garnered mix reactions from fans of the show, probably because we were too attached to the original Korean cast, Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun. Our version of My Love From The Star stars Jennylyn Mercardo opposite newcomer, Gil Cuerva. It got high ratings and was a constant topic on social media, too.
