Basketball Fans Want JRU’s John Amores Banned for Life After His Punching Spree

Nov 9, 2022   •   Kyzia Maramara

Things got heated at the College of St. Benilde (CSB) and Jose Rizal University’s (JRU) game for the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament last Tuesday, November 8. A fight broke out after JRU player John Amores lost his cool and proceeded to throw punches injuring St. Benilde players. What happened?

With only 3:22 left in the game, CSB Blazers managed to widen the gap vs JRU Heavy Bombers with a 71-51 lead. But after CSB’s Migz Oczon made his three-pointer shot, things started to go wrong. CSB’s CJ Flores and JRU’s John Amores fell entangled on the floor and Amores is seen in a heated argument against a referee. He was led back to the team’s corner looking restless.

Amores was then seen in a shouting match that caused him to charge the St. Benilde bench. Players and coaching staff rushed to stop him but not before he punched three CSB players: Migz Oczon, Taine Davis, and Jimboy Pasturan with the latter suffering a black eye.

The game comes to a halt

Coaching staff managed to lead the hotheaded athlete back to the dugout. The game ended with CSB’s victory but it was tainted by the brawl. An hour later, the NCAA issued a statement:

“The NCAA Management Committee has decided to stop the JRU Heavy Bombers vs College of St. Benilde Blazers game to avoid further escalation of untoward incidents and for the safety of the players, coaches, and audience,” it read.

A complete investigation of the incident is still ongoing.

Not the first time Amores did this

Apparently, Tuesday’s match wasn’t the first time Amores let his temper get the best of him. During the UCBL pre-season, he punched University of the Philippines basketball player Mark Belmonte. In fact, Amores has a case filed against him for “serious physical injuries” after Belmonte suffered from gum fracture, teeth dislocation, and mouth lacerations.

According to reports, UP sent a letter to JRU president Dr. Vicente Katigbak Fabella about this incident but it looks like they failed to take action.

“The unfortunate incident this afternoon where some CSB players were seriously injured could have been avoided if the school administration and the coaching staff of JRU acted swiftly on the matter,” wrote NoWhereToGoBut UP chairman Renan Dalisay on Facebook.

Dalisay also said the lack of action on JRU’s part to sanction their player or even investigate the Belmonte incident pushed UP to file a criminal case against Amores.

“We expected JRU to take proactive steps. But since nothing came out of our efforts with the school’s administration, we were morally bound to file a criminal case against JRU player John Amores,” he wrote.

There are those who think Amores deserves a second chance

Even after he got involved in two serious incidents, some think Amores is just misunderstood. Lester Prosper, Indonesian basketball player and Terrafirma import, posted a message for Amores on Facebook.

“John you should come have dinner with me hit me up king, let’s talk!!! Me and you. Someone, please deliver this message to him, I got some advice for you king to help save your career and what you can do to be better moving forward,” said Prosper.

In a different post, he explained that “you never know what someone’s going through in life” and that he only wanted to help.

But many want him banned for life

“Ilang beses na pala nasangkot sa away tong Amores na to dapat ban for life na,” read one comment on Facebook.

JRU’s John Amores should be banned for life from any Philippine basketball league.

Attempted to attack a fan then proceeded to attack the whole CSB team, punching out three Benilde players.

“This hooglian doesn’t deserve any more chances, enough is enough,” said the PBA Insider Twitter account.

Others think he needs rehabilitation for his anger management issues.

“He cannot say it is self-defense since he was already brought on their team bench, he is uncontrollably mad. Need rehabilitation for Anger Management. Kung meron,” read one Facebook comment.

Or faced with charges

Finally got to watch the Amores video/punches. Despicable behavior. Horrifying as well. Imagine being the parent/friend/family of a player who was punched and being both scared but also furious. I hope the NCAA comes out with the necessary punishments justified by the act.

Many also want JRU to kick Amores out and for the families of the injured to file cases against him.

If I were the parents of those Benilde players who were punched, I’ll file a criminal case against John Amores. JRU should now consider kicking him out. 🤬

Meanwhile, others think that this incident has definitely ended his basketball career and possibly aspirations to be an athlete.

Kiss your hoops career goodbye, John Amores

In the midst of all this, Pinoys are also asking JRU for accountability. This wasn’t the first time their player went on a rampage and yet they still failed to take action.

“John Amores has a history of violence. Why does JRU even let him play? Doesn’t it show the values of JRU admin when they let a guy who has had violent outbursts before play in the court again?,” read one tweet.

All eyes are now on the NCAA which will definitely have to dole out appropriate sanctions for what happened on the court.
