Darna must’ve known we needed her because she’s coming back! With her iconic star-spangled costume and unforgettable line “Ding, ang bato!” (“Ding, the stone!”), we welcome her with open arms. The latest Darna, as we all know, will be portrayed by Liza Soberano, who might very well actually say “Ding, the stone!” She is set to soar as Darna in the upcoming Star Cinema film adaptation by Erik Matti.

There was already a long line of Darnas before Liza, and we’ve rounded up some of them for you! Let’s re-visit our moments with the women who became our great superheroine throughout the years.

Rosa del Rosario

The great actress and Manila’s movie queen Rosa starred in the first ever Darna film way back in 1951. It was even written by Mars Ravelo himself! The kids of today may not remember her, but she was the first one in a long line of Darnas to come.

Vilma Santos

Vilma has portrayed Darna a number of times but the first one was for the 1973 Lipad, Darna, Lipad! The film was a top record-breaking box-office hit. This was also the first time that one actress portrayed both Darna and Narda.

Lorna Tolentino

In 1977, a very young Lorna Tolentino wore a conservative one-piece costume for her role as Darna.

Sharon Cuneta

Here’s something new for you – Megastar Sharon also portrayed Darna! She made an appearance in the 1986 Captain Barbell movie starring Edu Manzano and Herbert Bautista.

Anjanette Abayari

The former 1991 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe was casted by Viva Films to star in the Darna movie Darna: Ang Pagbabalik.

Regine Velasquez

Asia’s Songbird can do more than just sing – she can sport a star-spangled costume too! Regine appeared as Darna in the 2003 remake of Captain Barbell.

Angel Locsin

In 2005, Darna was introduced to the small screen as a TV series by GMA. This is the most popular portrayal of Darna, even creating TV history with the registered TV rating of 51.1%!

Marian Rivera

After the 2005 version, GMA revived Darna a few years later with Marian Rivera in 2009. She had just finished her other soap opera, Dyesebel, then. Marian is the last actress to portray Darna.

Who says Darna can only be played by a woman?  The late Comedy King also starred as the iconic Pinay superheroine in the 1979 Regal Films spoof Darna Kuno.

How’s that for nostalgia? Now we’re excited to see Liza’s version fly!

Kyzia spends most of her time capturing the world around her through photos, paragraphs, and playlists. She is constantly on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, and a great paperback thriller to pair with it.
