Barbie Dreamhouse: A Closer Look at Greta Gerwig's Pink Paradise

While we’re counting down the days to the theatrical release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie on July 21, Architectural Digest is out here getting fans more excited. The interior design and architecture magazine just gave everyone an exclusive, closer look at the Barbie Dreamhouse — a fuchsia paradise every girl has dreamt of living in growing up. Did this just make us anticipate the movie more? You bet!

The first thing you’ll notice is the absence of walls and doors. According to Gerwig, that’s because the Mattel doll feels like there’s nothing she needs to hide. And she’s right — it’s quite literally, the perfect doll house brought to life.

The first thing you’ll notice about the three-storey Dreamhouse is the giant slide that goes straight to the pool. “I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses,” says Gerwig in the interview. “Why walk downstairs when you can slide into your pool? Why trudge upstairs when you take an elevator that matches your dress?”

At the top floor is Barbie’s bedroom which features a clamshell headboard and a bright pink sequined coverlet. The second floor houses her walk-in closet and her coordinated outfits laid out to resemble Barbie outfits you get in toy boxes. And finally, the ground floor has her living room area complete with couches and a mini bar overlooking the pool.

Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer are responsible for bringing Barbie’s Dreamhouse to life. The set is built at the Warner Bros Studios lot outside London (so if you ever want to be propelled inside Barbieland, you know where to go). Greenwood and Spencer also revealed they took inspiration from “Palm Springs midcentury modernism” and brought actual Barbie Dreamhouses on Amazon to make the set as accurate as possible.

Once done, the finished set featured a house and furniture that’s 23% smaller than human size to make “the actors seem big in the space but small overall.”

Understandably, the Internet went wild over the photos. Many complimented Gerwig and her team for creating a whole set instead of relying on green screens and CGI, something most movies are prone to do these days. All of these amazing set photos, cast interviews, and teasers are just adding to everyone’s excitement for what’s to be the most-anticipated movie of the summer.

Barbie features a stellar cast including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, and more. The story is about a Barbie doll who lives in perfect Barbie Land but suddenly experiences a full-on existential crisis that pushes her to explore the real world. Check out the trailer here:
