Knock, knock. It’s nostalgia! How I Met Your Mother ended seven years ago but today we finally get news about a series sequel. The timing couldn’t have been better especially since Friends recently announced its reunion special coming in 2021. It’s time to once again suit up. Here’s what we know about the HIMYM sequel so far:
It stars Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff’s Lizzy McGuire sequel didn’t push through in 2019, bummer. But at least we get to see her star in a different nostalgic series as the main character for How I Met Your Mother‘s much-awaited sequel.
What’s it about?
Yep, you guessed it. It’s How I Met Your Father. Hilary Duff’s character, Sophie, tells her son the story of how she met his father in the year 2021. Just like the OG show, HIMYF will feature Sophie and her gang in the age of technology, dating, and figuring out what you want to be in life.
OG creators are still part of the team
While the show is helmed by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (This is Us, Love,Victor), HIMYM’s original creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, are still executive producers. That’s good news for fans who hate sequels straying away from the original story. Duff is reportedly also a producer of the show.
How many episodes will it have?
How I Met Your Father is going to be a 10-episode series. Too short? We know! Our fingers are crossed for more episodes once the show flies.
This isn’t the first time the show attempted a spinoff series
Did you know there were plans of a spinoff since the beginning? After HIMYM ended in 2014, a sequel originally titled How I Met Your Dad was filmed with Greta Gerwig as the lead star. Meg Ryan even narrated the story. Unfortunately, it was sent back to the drawing board after CBS didn’t like the pilot episode. But at least a new show has been greenlit now.
Where can you watch it?
The show is a Hulu Original and is going to air on Hulu. I know what you’re thinking: “But Hulu is not available in the Philippines!” You can work around that problem by purchasing a VPN. VPNs mask your IP address and will “trick” Hulu into thinking you’re streaming the show from the US. Problem solved! Check out VPN services you can download.
When is it going to air?
No word yet on when HIMYF will premiere but best believe we’re keeping our eyes peeled for that announcement.
Will the original cast appear in it?
We know you want to see Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall, and Lily again. However, the showrunners haven’t mentioned original cast appearances in the new series. We’ve also yet to see if the old story has ties with this new one. Petition for the OG cast to have a cameo, please!
BRB, re-watching HIMYM and crying over the ending again. Were you #TeamMother or #TeamRobin?
