It seems that acting was destined for Mackenyu, given that he is the son of the internationally renowned actor Chiba Shinichi, who launched into stardom through his martial arts skills – first in Japan, then internationally. Mackenyu said in his Vogue Hong Kong write-up that his father had always encouraged him to carve his own path. 

“I have been very familiar with the industry since I was a little boy,” he said. “But my father never pressured me into being an actor.”
