Melai Cantiveros Defends Daughter Against Bashers: ‘Huwag na Kayong Over Mag-React’

The family of Melai and Jason Francisco has recently gone viral for their fun and hilarious adventures in South Korea. But on the way home, a certain video caught the attention of netizens, where her 9-year-old daughter Mela made an unflattering comment about her mother’s appearance.

In one of her Instagram stories, Melai was with her family at the airport to head back to the Philippines and she was talking to her followers about their travels. Like most of us after a trip, Melai looked tired and haggard. Then her eldest daughter Mela joked: “Guys, nagre-refer si Mama ng mga products, beauty products, pero mukha pa rin siyang unggoy.”

Netizens weren’t impressed

The video went viral on Twitter, garnering over 1.3 million views as of writing. Some netizens found Mela’s joke “disrespectful” and “bastos”, telling Melai that she needs to set boundaries with her kids. One described the incident as “not a good example for [other] kids.”

There should have been serious discerning before this clip was posted. Boundaries must be set between jokes and insult, especially addressed to parents? Not good example po for kids!

Another speculated that this might be “bordering on makacontent lang para sa views.”

Sana mabalance yung funny content at yung pagiging responsible. Mela looks like a brat here. Baka naman may longer version na nasabihan siya ng parents na di tama yun.

Others, meanwhile, defended Mela and Melai, saying that parent-child dynamics are different in each family.

Melai defends her daughter

With the backlash her daughter’s comment is getting, Melai couldn’t stand by and let her daughter be hurt. She took to Instagram again to clear the air, posting a video of the mother and daughters unpacking their luggage from their trip.

There, Melai asked Mela: “Ate Mela, do you mean it, to say your mama is a monkey?”

To which Mela responded: “Hindi, Mama. I love you naman. Prank lang… joke-joke lang ‘yun.”

Melai captioned the video: “Mga Kamsamii di na sana ako magreact pero pag anak na ang pag-usapan di pwede guyssssssss, kasi bata lang ang anak ko guys. Di ako papayag na kung anu anu sasabihin niyo sa anak ko dahil ako ang dumidisplina sa mga anak ko, kilala ko mga anak ko madasalin mga yan pati mundo pinagdarasal nga ng mga yan. … Because alam ninyo minsan i-enjoy dapat ninyo ang life. Huwag ‘yung kahit konting kibot nag-re-react kayo, kasi life is enjoying.”

We would all do good to remember that celebrities are only showing us a peek into their lives on social media. They don’t post everything going on in their lives, so we don’t see the whole picture. Because videos on the internet don’t always tell the whole story.
