It’s a win for inclusivity! The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) becomes one of the first universities in the country to introduce a policy that allows students to choose the uniform they want to wear according to the gender they ascribe to.

The university admin gives approval

Last October, the PLM administration approved the Uniform and Dress Code Policy for Students, which purportedly champions the use of preferred uniforms of students. According to the school’s Supreme Student Council, this is considered “a step towards a more progressive and inclusive Pamantasan.”

Students show off their new uniforms

Since the announcement, LGBTQ members of the student body have proudly worn their uniform choice around campus. This previous weekend, LGBTQ+ rights university organization PLM Propaganda shared photos of PLM students wearing gender-affirming uniforms.

“Uniforms or clothes in general are a part of our everyday lives. These articles of clothing can be important to one’s identity as they are ways of expressing ourselves, particularly gender,” the organization’s post read. “With that, the PLM Propaganda is delighted to see our women of beauty and power wearing their gender-affirming uniforms.”

Miss Trans Global 2020 Mela Habijan also gave the photos of the PLM students a boost, which was met with excitement by many netizens.

Other schools also push for inclusion

Last September 2, the Department of Education (DepEd) issued a memorandum that reiterates the “strict implementation of and compliance to DO 32 s 2017 [or the Gender Responsive Basic Education Policy], especially in consideration of the upcoming opening of School Year 2022-2023 and the gradual return of learners to in-person classes.”

Since the issuance of this memorandum, many different high schools across the country have started implementing the gender-affirming policy to allow students to express their true selves through their chosen uniform.
