Last night (or early morning in the PH), the Recording Academy released the list of nominees for all categories of the 2022 Grammy Awards. There was a lot of excitement and frustration alike, but most of these were pushed aside when many were shocked to see the name of legendary classical musician Ludwig van Beethoven on several nominations. This prompted many Twitter users, mostly fans of global superstar BTS and other Korean acts, to make hilarious memes over Beethoven’s supposed Grammy nominations.

Beethoven comeback?!

In case you didn’t know, Ludwig van Beethoven was a legendary German pianist and composer renowned in the world of music. His works are some of the most performed classical music over the centuries, and many are able to recognize his works easily. And he lived in the late 18th to early 19th century. So everyone was surprised when he got several Grammy nominations last night. Or did he?

why beethoven still getting noms dawg this man been 6ft deep for centuries now

— mon⁷ (@knjgIoss) November 23, 2021

No one is doing it like him!

The *actual* nominees

If you’re still confused, the nominees don’t actually include Beethoven. The nominations simply had his name in their song or album title as attribution to the original composer. Below are the actual nominations:

  • Beethoven: The Last Three Sonatas — Ann-Katrin Zimmermann, album notes writer (Sunwook Kim) — nominated for Best Album Notes
  • Beethoven: Cello Sonatas – Hope Amid Tears — Richard King, engineer (Yo-Yo Ma & Emanuel Ax) — nominated for Best Engineered Album, Classical
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 — Mark Donahue, engineer; Mark Donahue, mastering engineer (Manfred Honeck, Mendelssohn Choir Of Pittsburgh & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) — nominated for Best Engineered Album, Classical
  • “Beethoven: Symphony No. 9” — Manfred Honeck, conductor (Mendelssohn Choir Of Pittsburgh & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) — nominated for Best Orchestral Performance
  • “Beethoven: Cello Sonatas – Hope Amid Tears” — Yo-Yo Ma & Emanuel Ax — nominated for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance
  • “Beethoven & Brahms: Violin Concertos” — Gil Shaham; Eric Jacobsen, conductor (The Knights) — nominated for Best Classical Instrumental Solo

Congratulations to @manfredhoneck, @pghsymphony & @MendelssohnPgh! Their recording of Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 has been nominated for the 2022 GRAMMY® Award for Best Orchestral Performance and Best Engineered Album, Classical (Mark Donahue, engineer)! #PSOBeethoven9 #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/zRBm1a2zLs

So no. Beethoven himself wasn’t nominated. But of course, netizens couldn’t help but poke fun at how many nominations featured his name when the musician has been six feet under for centuries. Hence, a slew of memes of Beethoven-sunbaenim. (Sunbaenim is a Korean honorific used to address someone who is older than you or has spent more time than you did at work or school.)
