‘Pass, Walang Red Flag’: Netizens Give Reasons Why They Don’t Want Vico Sotto for President

Fresh off the 2022 elections, thousands of Filipinos already want re-electionist Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto to run as president someday. The 32-year-old was first elected as mayor in 2019 and has since proven a clean track record of good governance and transparency in office. A politician like Sotto is a rare find in our local government, a fact that’s incredibly despairing seeing as he’s just doing what he’s elected to do. And with the recently concluded elections, it’s apparent which political candidates Filipinos will always gravitate towards.

Malinaw na malinaw ang tinig nating mga Pasigueño: TULOY ANG PAGBABAGO.

Maraming salamat sa mga nagpakita ng tiwala’t suporta sa buong Giting ng Pasig.#IbaNaNgayon

Those on Facebook grieving for the loss of their chosen candidate have been coping differently. A Facebook user posted a photo of Sotto with the caption “Hihintayin ka namin. Ikaw ang pag-asa.” To date, it has garnered 55k reactions, 27k shares, and 6.5k comments. And the comments? You wouldn’t know if you should laugh or cry.

Filipinos “reject” Vico Sotto for president

Netizens flooded the comments section with dozens of reasons why they would never consider voting for Vico Sotto if he ever runs for president. Most of the comments say he’s “overqualified,” he has a degree, and they haven’t seen him sing karaoke or dance on stage either.

Vico Sotto is “overqualified” to be president

Sotto is one of the few government officials Filipinos have deemed as the “most trusted male figure in the government right now.” In 2021, US President Joe Biden’s administration even recognized him as one of the 12 global anticorruption champions. Filipinos admire Sotto so much that some even started a fandom (Vivico) as an inside joke.

Unfortunately, this makes him overqualified, according to netizens. The Philippines simply isn’t used to Sotto’s brand of clean government seeing.

Funny? Depressing? Sotto might not “qualify” for the presidency but at least those who actually approve of him can say one thing:
