Thanks to tires we get smooth, comfortable rides. But, for all their convenience, they are also a danger to the environment. Each one is made up of rubber, carbon, plastics, and oil. This 2017 study shows how a tire’s wear and tear over the years scatter microplastics everywhere and especially pollute the ocean. At the end of its life, it gets dumped in landfills, waiting for hundreds of years to decay.

Local brand Siklo Pilipinas wants to change that. Established in 2012 by couple Lyndon and Clarice Ecuacion, Siklo makes a new life out of something that’s essentially left for trash.

The brand’s name itself means “cycle.” The couple discovered how efficient tires could be when they had to protect their electronic equipment from ocean weather.

Since then, they’ve explored making a range of products including lifestyle bags, wallets, belts, and pouches. They’ve upcycled more than 20 tons of tire innertubes!

A tire’s innertubes are made of tough materials so each product needs to be handstitched and handcrafted. This makes no two products of theirs the same.

The small team behind Siklo Pilipinas themselves tested these products to make sure they’re of the highest quality. They can withstand the strongest of weather from storms to snow. It’s waterproof too and, depending on your chosen bag, made with lots of extra features.

You can find a bag for your cycling adventures like the convertible Manibela Pannier. Do you like hiking? You can take your Kawit Siklo bag anywhere and it will protect your items. There are even a couple of designs perfect for office work like the Bakayan tote bag.
