2020 brings us world-class musicals that are sure to delight every theater lover’s soul. Get your wallets ready, because these musicals will be worth every centavo! Now without further ado, we give you the musicals to look forward to this year:

 

The Band’s Visit

What happens when an Egyptian police band gets stuck in an isolated desert down in Israel? Join as the authoritative leader Tewfiq (Rody Vera) and his band get lost in an Israeli desert town, where they meet café owner Dina (Menchu Lauchengo-Yulo). The all-star cast also includes Mark Bautista, Bibo Reyes, Niño Alejandro, Reb Atadero, Jill Peña, Floyd Tena, and Maronne Cruz. The Band’s Visit will run from March 13-29, 2020 at the Carlos P. Bongga Ka Day

Get your disco shoes on and join the cast of Bongga Ka Day as they take you back in time with their lively musical. Bonnga Ka Day is an original Filipino musical that will feature the ’70s band Hotdog, all the better to tap your toes to. Carousel

Rodgers and Hammerstein brings you a story of love and sacrifice in Carousel. When carousel barker Billy Bidgelow (Gian Magdangal) falls in love with a young mill worker Julie (Nikki Gil), they don’t expect the consequences of their sudden romance. One dark night Billy makes a decision that changes their lives forever. Carousel will run from May 1-24, 2020 at the Onstage Theater in Greenbelt 1, Makati City. For tickets, visit TicketWorld.

 

Maxie the Musical

First staged in 2013, the stage adaptation of the 2005 indie film Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros tells the story of Maxie, a young gay boy who lives in his slums. When two men attempt to molest Maxie, he is saved by Victor, a young police officer. This marks the start of their friendship. Returning cast members Roeder Camañag, Nazer Salcedo, Jay Gonzaga, Greg de Leon, Jules Dela Paz, and Elliot Eustacio, who are all are set to tell Maxie’s story once more. Maxie the Musical will open in July 2020 at Hyundai Hall, Areté of Ateneo de Manila University.

 

Untitled Rico Blanco Musical

Fans of Rico Blanco better be ready as a musical featuring Blanco’s song is set to open this year! Not much is known about the project, but we’re psyched from the teaser image alone.

 

On Your Feet!

Are you ready to conga? The hit Tony-nominated musical On Your Feet is set to open this November 2020. Based on the lives of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, On Your Feet is an upbeat musical that features Cuban-Pop music. For more updates, visit Atlantis Theatrical’s Facebook page.

 

Dekada ’70

Based on the film with the same title, Dekada ’70 is the story of the Bartolome Family in the aftermath of the declaration of Martial Law. The musical will run from February 21 to March 8, 2020 at The Doreen Black Box, Areté in Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.

 

Matilda the Musical

The story of a five-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis is now coming to the Manila stage. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, Matilda is a musical about a young girl who uses her special power to help her teacher Miss Honey fight mean Miss Trunchbull. Matilda the Musical will run from March 5-15, 2020, at the Theatre at Solaire. For tickets, visit TicketWorld.
