Say Goodbye to Your Social Life: Overwatch Has Arrived
By Jaime Gonzalo
Attention: the most highly anticipated multiplayer game of the year is now available on the market! This is not a drill! Repeat, this is not a drill!
But seriously. For the yet to be initiated, Overwatch is a multiplayer six on six shooter with cartoony graphics and extra smooth gameplay. Blizzard, which hasn’t released an original game in over a decade, now gives us what promises to be a game that people will be playing for years to come. With over 21 characters in different roles to choose from, beautiful maps, different game modes and a thriving online community, Overwatch is already a huge success. The game has gotten tons of positive reviews since its BETA and release, which makes gamers excited to join in on the fun. Here are some reasons to play Overwatch, just in case you needed any more convincing.
8. It’s like a spiritual successor to Quake, Team Fortress and DOTA combined.
Enter the game through a tutorial mode and play with AI’s until tested and proven. Once you’ve mastered the skills required to beat the AI’s, it’s time to enter the real battle ground of online multiplayer. As a first person shooter, Overwatch definitely surpasses the standards.

6. 21 different characters, 21 different ways to play
Overwatch divides its characters into four types: offense, defense, support, and tank. Being a six on six shooter, choosing the right character for the team is paramount. You can’t just go into battle with six offensive characters and expect to win. You have to distribute roles accordingly and play each role properly if you expect to get anything out of a match. This is where the 21 different characters will make the game very exciting. With countless combinations of characters, the possibilities are endless.
5. It Requires Actual Strategy and Teamwork
The option to switch characters in-game is also a big factor—much like changing formations in a real sport. If you’re trailing behind by a large margin, it would be smart to go for a more offensive lineup. The same logic goes for when you are trying to protect a lead. It’s better to lineup a defensive roster with minimal firepower to slowly inch to victory.
There are a lot of ways to win in Overwatch, but strategy and teamwork will always be your best friends.
If you were a new player and you see this other character sporting a skin you’ve never seen before, then chances are you will be intimidated by the amount of progress (and experience) this player has gone through. Throw in some taunts and that player could be akin to a schoolyard bully. It’s all for show but sometimes intimidation is half the battle.
3. Skill builds up the more you play.
The game requires mastery, and that takes a whole lot of time. You will die all the time at first, and that will frustrate you. Don’t let the frustration get a hold of you though, because the longer you stick to it, pretty soon you’ll be the one eliminating everyone in the arena. These types of games will never get boring because there will always be competition. So grab a copy and put those hours in!
2. It has the potential to become an E-sport.
1. The first in 17 years
After Blizzard scrapped Titan, fans were disappointed that another project had gone down the drain. To everyone’s delight, Blizzard announced that a “better” game would be coming out—and now it’s here in the form of Overwatch. You can expect any Blizzard game to be a hit for many years to come. After all, Blizzard did create cult masterpieces in the form of Diablo and Warcraft (and all of its expansions—DOTA included) which are still being raved about today.
So kiss your loved ones and tell them you’ll see them soon. The world of Overwatch awaits.
