Dagupan City in Pangasinan recorded the PH’s highest heat index so far this year at 51-degrees Celsius on May 8. That’s why you were sweating too much and your head was pounding. PAGASA says temperatures like this could cause heatstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps. So how do we beat the summer heat?
Drink your water and stay hydrated
Don’t skip out on drinking lots of water this summer (or ever for that matter). Your iced coffee and milk tea will only cause your body to burn more fuel ergo, making you warmer. Stay away from drinking too much alcohol on warm summer days too since it will dehydrate you. For a more refreshing summer drink, you can drink fresh fruit juices and healthy smoothies.
Wear light, presko clothing
It’s time to lay your hoodies and black tees to rest in your closet, you won’t be needing them anytime soon. Switch to light clothing both in color and material such as linen to help air flow circulate better. Clothes like these also help your body heat and sweat evaporate.
Take a cold shower to cool down
Getting antsy from the heat? A quick, cold shower ought to cool you down. Cold showers are energy-saving too since you don’t need to turn on the heater for once. And after you’ve scrubbed your body clean, let your skin air dry naturally so you can max out the cooling effects longer.
Eat light and eat healthily
Stuffing yourself with carbs isn’t a good idea during the summer. Your body will have to produce more energy to digest your fatty foods and quarter-pounders. Instead, try eating lots of salads, vegetables, and fruits. Remember to eat light and eat often.
Get one of those portable air coolers
Don’t have air conditioning? Get yourself an air cooler you can drag anywhere in the house. You can even get one for as low as P355.
Snack on healthy, delicious cold treats
Forget your tubs of ice cream, snack on frozen berries instead! Ice cream contains fat, protein, and carbohydrates that actually makes your body warmer. On the other hand, frozen fruits like strawberries, blackberries, kiwi, and grapes have a high water content that will help you get hydrated in no time.
Block out the sun and turn off the lights
Consider purchasing blackout curtains for your room. It blocks out every last bit of light from the window and helps you control the room temperature. Of course, these work well with air-conditioned rooms. And since it’s too hot to function, turn off the lights around the house. This will also help you conserve electricity.
Get a hair cut
Quarantine hair is fashionable but you should consider giving it up in this scorching summer heat. Get a fresh cut and sport that bob or boy cut. But before you chop those locks off, consider donating them to organizations helping cancer patients.
